Apple: Siri Is Not Coming to Older iPhone Versions

Apple’s voice assistant Siri will remain exclusive to the iPhone 4S, Apple has confirmed.

In an answer to an inquiry from the developer Michael Steeber, asking about a possible special Siri-enabled iOS build for iPod touch and iPhone 4 owners, Apple responded with a resounding “no”.

“Siri only works on iPhone 4S and we currently have no plans to support older devices,” wrote Apple’s representative in the answer.

It’s hardly a surprise: Siri is one of the most recognizable features of the iPhone 4S, and although it could work on the iPhone 4, too, Apple probably wants to give iPhone 4S buyers a little extra something for their money.

Of course, Apple can change its mind in the future, but for now it seems that only iPhone 4S owners will enjoy the benefits of chatting with their phone.

9/11 : US Alert over Bomb Plot

Ceremende A HUNT has been mounted for two al-Qaeda operatives who officials fear have flown in to the US from Afghanistan to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Counterterrorism officials were tipped off that the men planned to stage a car bomb attack to coincide with the September 11 anniversary. New York and Washington have been put on high alert after a Middle East informant revealed the new al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, had ordered the bomb plot. The Washington Post reported the informant told the CIA that at least two men, one of whom could be a US citizen of Arab ancestry, arrived in the country as early as seven days ago, according to senior American law enforcement officials. There was a third man involved in the plot, the informant said, but he appeared to have travelled to Europe.

Joe Biden, the US Vice-President, confirmed intelligence had 'specific' information from a 'credible source' that a plot involving 'a car bomb' may be under way. However, he stressed: 'We don't have a smoking gun.'

The Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, named al-Qaeda as being behind the suspected threat. The New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said the police, FBI 'and entire intelligence community have been on heightened alert'. But the informer's intel on the plot was second or third-hand, an official said.

Despite the apparent lack of detail, both cities increased security ahead of ceremonies in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which killed almost 3000 people. The President, Barack Obama, and former president George Bush are to attend a ceremony at Ground Zero in Manhattan.

Ceremonies will also be held at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where all 40 passengers and crew members died when United Airlines flight 93 was flown into a field.

Yesterday, authorities deployed bomb-sniffing dogs on the Washington subway, police searched vehicles on New York's Brooklyn Bridge and heavily armed officers were posted at major railway stations.

Two senior American law enforcement officials said an informer in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region passed word of the plot on Wednesday. The informer said two men left Afghanistan, travelled through one or more other countries before the US. Agents are examining passenger lists.

The informant gave a vague physical description of the two men - one described as 152 centimetres tall, the other 172 centimetres. One of the men used the name Suliman, common in the Middle East.

'All this information is very, very sketchy,' one of the law enforcement officials said.

US intelligence analysts said they were examining the possibility that the suspected plot was ordered by Zawahiri, and that it was accelerated after a US drone strike last month killed Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, a Libyan who had taken over as al-Qaeda's top operational planner.

In their haste to speed up the attack, which may also have been planned to commemorate Rahman's death, the plotters may have allowed word of the scheme to leak out.

One federal official said the informer reported that the two plotters were told if tight security made a car or truck bomb impossible, they should try a less complicated attack that would spread panic. Although Mrs Clinton and Mr Biden publicly discussed the threat, they tried to strike a balance between urging vigilance and preventing panic.

'There are specifics, in that sense it was credible,' Mr Biden said on the ABC News program Good Morning America, 'but there's no certitude'.

The increased police presence forced drivers heading towards Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge to squeeze into a single lane and through a gauntlet of police officers, who walked around the cars. More bomb sweeps of parking garages were planned; ferries were to be given extra police; and cars parked illegally were to be towed.

Officials briefed on the threat offered varying views of how serious it was, and some suggested that the strong reaction from federal and local agencies reflected heightened wariness around the anniversary.

In a notebook found in the compound of bin Laden after he was killed in May, the al-Qaeda leader mused about the possibility of mounting an attack on the September 11 anniversary. To help ease public concerns Mr Bloomberg went to his office by subway on Friday.

'It's serious, but I think the right answer is to go about your business,' he said. 'We've got to make sure we don't let the terrorists take away our rights without any terrorism. If you do lock yourself in your house because you're scared, they're winning.'

Apple's iPhone 5 Could Launch Worldwide on Oct 21

Ceremende - The word within the world of technology is that an October release for Apple's eagerly awaited iPhone handset is now almost certain, after continued silence from the company about when the handset will appear.

A screenshot submitted to American technology blog This Is My Next seems to confirm the day might well be October 21. The screenshot, sent to American blogger Chris Ziegler by an anonymous employee of the Best Buy electronics chain, which recently launched stores in the UK, shows an email sent to American Best Buy employees regarding an upcoming Apple launch.

It requests that a manager be present at 6am on October 21 to install a 'large Apple fixture' on the big screens in the American electronics store. The tantalising aspect to this detail is that 6am is the time at which Apple requested managers attend for the launch of iPhone 4 last year - also to install screens.

The Best Buy employee also revealed that an event was scheduled for October 10 for managers to discuss upcoming 'big releases' - which would fit with an iPhone 5 launch a fortnight later. Last year's iPhone 4 launch saw the device released in the UK and the US simultaneously, with other countries following rapidly afterwards.

An Apple spokesperson said, 'We are not commenting on rumours or speculation.' While the company is typically tight-lipped about the launch dates of its iconic smartphones, evidence has been mounting that a late October release seems likely.

Apple's marketing machine is extremely well-oiled, particularly when it comes to their hero product, the 100-million-selling iPhone - and preview events are usually orchestrated weeks in advance. With no official word from within the company in early September, a late October release looks increasingly likely.

Android rivals such as Samsung's Galaxy S II are now also considerably faster than the current iPhone 4: the company may not be able to afford to wait much longer than late October to release their upgraded handset.

An Apple engineer losing a prototype in a bar a few weeks before release has also become a regular ritual. This year, a prototype iPhone 5 was reportedly lost in Cava 22, a San Francisco bar, and sold via the internet - although details of the incident are disputed, and no clear details of the device itself have emerge.

The late October release date would appear to be supported by images that appeared on the internet recently said to show production parts for a new model that have arrived at Chinese resellers in preparation for the global launch of the high-powered phone.

The images of parts labeled N94, have been reproduced by industry websites such as Apple Leaks, MacPost and Apple Insider. It's perhaps wise not to place too much faith in Chinese components or one grainy email screenshot, however.

The enthusiasm of the Apple faithful is such that by this stage in the genesis of ANY Apple device, the rumour mill is in such overdrive that 'evidence' such as sketches, grainy pictures, and even orders placed with Taiwanese chip foundries have all been hailed as definitive 'proof' of a release date, or form factor, for iPhone 5.

As ever, the one thing is certain is that Apple will continue to 'not comment on rumours or speculation' until the company are ready to tell us, where and when we can buy iPhone 5 - and what exactly the much-hyped phone will do that makes it worth all this attention.

San Fransisco's Nudists Forced to Sit on Their Towels

Ceremende : Nudists in San Francisco might soon lose some of their freedom to bare it all. Walking around naked is still legal. But new legislation introduced on Tuesday would require nudists to put something under their bottoms if they sit down in a public place.

Under city supervisor Scott Wiener's proposal, nudists would also be required to cover up when they are in a restaurant. The supervisor said the legislation would ensure that public health standards are met by requiring nudists to put a towel or similar item between their body and a public seat.

'San Francisco is a liberal and tolerant city, and we pride ourselves on that fact,' Wiener said in a statement.

'Yet, while we have a variety of views about public nudity, we can all agree that when you sit down naked, you should cover the seat, and that you should cover up when you go into a food establishment,' the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Wiener claims to have received numerous constituent complaints and saw some of the unsanitary behaviour himself—particularly in the gay-centric Castro area of the city.

'One would hope we wouldn’t need to legislate this, but people aren’t doing it,' he said. Wiener said that his office has not received any complaints from local nudist groups about the proposal.
